Choose the size and the right application workflow
A correctly sized rectangle is only one part of preparing a photograph. Check how your application receives the image before choosing an export.
Use this page to decide what to do with your original photo. The presets below calculate a print grid at 300 pixels per inch; they do not reproduce every rule of an issuing authority. A digital application can require the unedited original even when its printed form uses a familiar passport size.
Compare the print-size templates
Width comes first in this table. The pixel column describes this editor’s single-photo export, rather than a guaranteed digital-upload specification. Generic templates have no official document attached to them.

Application notes and official sources

United States — printed passport photo
For a paper application. Online passport renewal has its own original-photo upload workflow; a 600 × 600 print crop is not an online-renewal recommendation.
Open this size in the editor →China — printed visa photo
This preset follows the linked visa photo specification, not every Chinese passport or resident-ID process. Check your visa centre’s current digital-upload and printed-copy instructions.
Open this size in the editor →Schengen visa — 35 × 45 mm reference
The linked German missions checklist uses 35 × 45 mm. This is not a universal EU passport preset. Use the checklist and photo rules of the consulate handling your application.
Open this size in the editor →United Kingdom — printed passport photo
UK online applications require a digital photo: at least 600 × 750 pixels, 50 KB–10 MB. GOV.UK says not to crop a photo taken on your own device. The 413 × 531 print export does not meet that digital minimum.
Open this size in the editor →Canada — passport size reference
Canada requires photos taken in person by a commercial photographer and professionally printed; home-printed or edited photos are not accepted. Use this size as a reference, not a substitute for that service. Check required information on the back of the print.
Open this size in the editor →Australia — printed passport reference
The Australian Passport Office specifies a 35–40 mm width and 45–50 mm height; this preset uses 35 × 45 mm. It recommends a professional provider and does not recommend online photo services. Check paper and printing requirements before using an export.
Open this size in the editor →India OCI — 2-inch print reference
The linked OCI print PDF and live FAQ describe different head/background guidance. For an online application, follow the current portal and your mission’s instructions. This preset is not a general Indian passport rule or a digital compliance check.
Open this size in the editor →Generic 1-inch — 25 × 35 mm
No official document is represented by this generic size. Ask the receiving organization for dimensions, background and file requirements.
Open this size in the editor →Generic portrait — 35 × 49 mm
Informal inch-size labels vary. Check the actual millimetres rather than assuming this template is a U.S. 2 × 2 inch photograph.

If you need paper copies: confirm the capture, editing and printing rules first. A 300 DPI tag cannot turn a home print into a professional print or add a photographer’s details to its reverse. Once you have a permitted source and workflow, use the editor to inspect framing and prepare the intended size. Measure a test print before ordering several copies.
If you need an online upload: make a separate checklist for format, pixel dimensions, minimum and maximum file size, and whether cropping is permitted. Do not send the printable sheet to a portal expecting a single original portrait. Keep the original unchanged so the application can perform its own crop where required.
If the portal and a PDF disagree: do not combine the most convenient parts of both. This is especially relevant to the OCI reference above. Open the current instructions for your mission or application route and ask that office which rule applies. The editor cannot resolve that decision from a country name alone.
If the problem is appearance: compare our framing and lighting illustrations with your original. The editor reports file dimensions and exposed frame corners, but you must check the eyes, expression, background and likeness yourself. A new capture is often the useful next step when the original is blurred or has a strong facial shadow.
For the printing stage, follow the actual-size printing walkthrough. To report an incorrect preset, use Contact and include the official source and application method; you do not need to send a portrait.
